Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT), grant 2025.07335.BDANA. Runs 2025-10-01 to 2029-09-30. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-06-26); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: The impressive development of quantum hardware in recent years have led to some of the first claims of quantum computational advantage. Some of these claims have been achieved via the ability to very precisely control bosonic quantum systems, made of photons or ultracold atoms, in order to solve the boson sampling problem. Despite these fundamental breakthroughs, the practical utility of such devices is still poorly understood. Thus, the main aim of this project is to better characterize what kind of useful computational problems can be tackled by near-term bosonic quantum devices that go beyond the capabilities of classical algorithms. This characterization will be of great interest not only to academic groups working on quantum computation but also to the emerging quantum industry building photonic quantum computers.
