Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (3599-PPCDT), grant PTDC/BTA-BTA/32314/2017. Funded amount: EUR 239,988, as stated by the source. Runs 2018-09-01 to 2021-08-31. Keywords: rare earth elements, molecular recognition, aptamer/DNAzyme, recovery/sensing. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-07-18); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: This project aims to create new processes and methods to improve the recycling of REEs as well as their detection, particularly Neodymium Nd. For that, the project will produce a new Nd-specific DNAzyme molecular recognition element able to specifically bind Neodymium ions. This molecular affinity will be used in two ways. First, Nd-specific DNAzyme will be immobilized on the surface of silica supports and conjugates used and tested as specific adsorbent to recover Neodymium from aqueous mixtures. In a second approach Nd-specific DNAzyme will be immobilized over gold nanoparticles AuNPs and/or Quantum Dots QDs and both nanoparticles used in colorimetric or FRET-based assays to detect Nd3+ in solution. Both assays will be translated into a microfluidic device in order to create a portable sensor for Neodymium detection in contaminated areas.
