Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT), grant 2023.04628.BD. Runs 2023-12-01 to 2027-11-30. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-07-21); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Environmental pollution is a major contributor for climatic changes and worldwide health concern. Therefore, pollution management is of paramount importance. Hence, this project seeks to develop alternative strategies for pollution management and to promote a circular economy, in line with Sustainable Development Goals. It focuses on reducing pollutants through the synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQD) from plant-based biomass, food and plastic waste. These CQD will be thoroughly purified to obtain high quality CQD, while containing and disposing of leftover residues. Then, the CQD photocatalytical degradation ability to eliminate medicinal drugs will be tested through a high throughput degradation screening. Finally, the CQD will be used for sustainable hydrogen production through electrochemical water splitting, aiming for an efficient and green method for exploration of a renewable source of energy. It is expected that this project contributes to environmental remediation and aid in the mitigation of the effects of climate change.
