Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (Financiamento do Plano Estratégico de Unidades de I&D - 2013/2015 - OE), grant UID/FIS/00618/2013. Funded amount: EUR 100,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2015-01-01 to 2018-12-31. Keywords: Complex and quantum fluids, Non-linear dynamics, Stability and phase diagrams, Symmetry and field theories, Exact sciences, Exact sciences/Physical sciences. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-07-23); national funding data, not CORDIS; selected because its keywords name quantum. Abstract given by the source: Complex classical fluids, such as liquid crystals or colloidal suspensions, are soft as they are characterized by large responses to small external perturbations. Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) – the simplest of quantum fluids – are not only superfluid but are also ‘super-soft’ as their response to the smallest perturbations may be catastrophic. Soft matter and controlling the phenomena associated with it are critical to industry. The complex dynamical response of soft matter is also crucially important in many experiments and applications. Indeed, recent experiments on liquid crystals and colloids reveal novel dynamical phenomena, under confinement or under flow, which beg for detailed theoretical understanding. External fields drive intriguing effects in BECs, paving the way for the new field of quantum simulators (an idea that goes back to Richard Feynman) which are beginning to be investigated experimentally, an example of which is the spin-orbit coupling effect in spinor condensates (of atoms or quasi-particles). In the last 10 years CFTC led, at the national level, theoretical research in soft matter and non-linear phenomena in BECs and the work is recognized internationally. The strategic project (2015 – 2020) is focused on the complex dynamics of these fluids, and organized in two research lines on complex dynamics of classical and quantum fluids. Each line comprises ongoing (short-term) projects, as well as new synergetic (long-term) ones that require our complementary skills, knowledge, and resources. The output of this research will contribute to the sustained growth of the impact and the international visibility of CFTC, not least by facilitating and promoting collaborations with experimental groups in Portugal and elsewhere. In addition to its broad expertise in theoretical and computational Physics, distinguishing characteristics of the team include its youth (average age below 40) and dynamism, which will enable it to tackle new ambitious projects [shortened; the full text is on the OpenAIRE page]
