Abstract given by the source: Two-dimensional conformal quantum field theory and three-dimensional topological quantum field theory play a decisive role in diverse areas of fundamental physics as well as in mathematics. This project aims at vastly increasing the knowledge about such theories at a fully non-perturbative level. A common theme will be the quest for understanding quantum systems with defects, i.e. with interfaces or domain walls between different phases of a theory. The primary goal in conformal field theory is to devise a universal framework for constructing state spaces and correlation functions, including those for surfaces with defect lines. This construction must in particular be suitable for so-called logarithmic conformal field theories and permit to establish essential compatibility relations among correlation functions. In topological field theory a major aim is to be able to calculate observables that are associated to three-dimensional manifolds with physical boundaries and with embedded defects. Reaching these goals will require sophisticated mathematical methods and concepts. Some of these may need to be adapted or newly developed, whereby also purely mathematical issues form an integral part of the project. It is also intended to use results from these investigations to develop new calculational tools in various fields, ranging from non-geometric backgrounds in string theory to interfaces with gapped excitations between quantum Hall fluids in condensed matter physics.
