Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT), grant 2021.07608.BD. Runs 2021-09-01 to 2025-02-06. Abstract given by the source: The thesis concerns novel control and optimization developments targeting dynamics of quantum systems to harness the formidable potential for computation and communications of the extraordinary quantum properties. First, we address low-dimensional quantum systems, notably, unitary transformations, resetting quantum systems, and quantum entanglement theory in the presence of super-selection rules, for which we will develop novel open loop -Maximum Principle of Pontryagin in Gamkrelidze form - and closed loop and feedback control- Lyapunov and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman methods - for quantum systems under state constraints. A bi-level quantum control architecture will follow from the combination of the developed methods. Second, quantum control of infinite dimensional many-body systems targeting the scaling of the previous results will be considered. Issues such as irreversibility, reachability, and computability are at the core of the envisaged developments on Variational Quantum Analysis, and Reinforcement Learning. High fidelity gate implementation, and quantum-variational-circuit design will illustrate the derived results and methods.
