Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT), grant 2021.05479.BD. Runs 2022-01-01 to 2025-12-31. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-07-23); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) promise a considerable reduction in energy consumption but are composed by high-cost and finite rare-earth-elements. I propose the conversion of organic waste into fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs), metal-free carbon nanoparticles with remarkable light-emitting properties, to be used as value-added light-emitting components for WLEDs in energy-efficient devices. This will allow a more sustainable fabrication of WLEDs by replacing a finite resource (rare-earth-elements) by a ubiquitous and renewable one (organic waste), favoring a circular economy. Waste-based CQDs will be developed to emit in all the spectral range (blue, green and red colors) required for white-light-emission, while being excited by UV-light. The CQDs will be encapsulated into light-manipulating photonic crystals, which can narrow the emission bands of CQDs, increasing their color purity and enhancing their light-emission. Proof-of-concept will be provided by the fabrication of high-quality WLEDs. Life cycle assessment (LCA) will validate the sustainability of this nanotechnology-based solution.
