Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (FCT_CPCA_2020_01), grant CPCA/A0/7287/2020. Funded amount: EUR 9,227.86, as stated by the source. Runs 2021-01-01 to 2021-12-31. Keywords: Five Dimensional Yang-Mills, Non-renormalizable Quantum Field Theories, Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics, Monte Carlo Simulation, Criticality., Exact sciences. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-07-20); national funding data, not CORDIS; selected because its keywords name quantum. Abstract given by the source: Current insights on non-renormalizable Quantum Field Theories (NRQFTs) are scarce. These may or not be physical, but the absence of analytical tools has made their study mostly inaccessible. Meanwhile, the idea that General Relativity (GR) may be a fundamental NRQFT is still an open question. A detailed study of 5D Yang-Mills QFT (somehow similar to GR) is required to settle the possibility of NRQFTs in 5D, helping clarify the nature of GR. Physicists have been trying to answer this query for 30 years, with no definitive answers. Meanwhile, one of the most powerful tools for assessing such theories are Monte Carlo (MC) simulations in a lattice version of the theory. These are the methods to be employed here for trying to settle this issue in 5D Yang-Mills models. The aim of this project is to assess possible physical NRQFTs in 5D, which can boost a new research branch, interfacing between QFT and GR. Two extensions of the 4D action to 5D are considered: the fundamental+adjoint model (F+A) and the variable size Wilson Loop model (VSWL). An optimized MC algorithm is implemented and preliminary results were already obtained. The latter point towards the absence of 2nd-order criticality in the F+A but a presence for size 1 and 2 VSWL. Nevertheless, a finite-size scaling analysis must be made to validate them. In 5D this quickly increases the required CPU time, making HPC dedicated resources imperative.
