Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (Concurso de Projetos de I&D em Todos os Domínios Científicos - 2022 - ICDT; Concurso de Projetos de I&D em Todos os Domínios Científicos - 2022), grant 2022.03564.PTDC. Funded amount: EUR 249,864, as stated by the source. Runs 2023-03-01 to 2026-12-31. Keywords: Nonlinear phononics, Dynamical multiferroicity, Strongly correlated perovskite oxides, Atomic interfacial connections, Exact sciences. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-07-23); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: The project aims at inducing dynamical multiferroicity by coherent excitation of optical phonons and magnons into nonlinear regime by intense single-cycle THz-pulses, in atomically connected epitaxial nanometric layers onto oriented substrates. This project will explore the combined effects of the: i) cross-coupling between magnetism and optical lattice/spin excitations in strongly correlated perovskite oxides, ii) oxide-oxide interfacial atomic connectivity in the phonon excitation and propagation, and iii) lattice distortions due to epitaxial strain in non-relaxed structures. We expect quantum-phase control by tuning the energy landscape towards the stabilization of multiferroic phases with high magnetoelectric effect, that do not occur spontaneously, and to understand the properties of condensed matter away from equilibrium. The project outcomes will contribute to a better understanding of light-matter coupling effects, which can be further exploited in tuning physical properties for applications with technological impact using the coherent excitations in complex solids for sensing and turn these effects to applications in high frequency data processing devices. Moreover, the coherent control of lattice rotations can be the route to solve non-trivial material science problems within a similar time scale, for example, to tailoring electronic phase topology, and the quest for the universality in non-equilibrium phase transitions. An inherent impact is expected on the young researchers advanced training and the improvement of the technical and experimental competences of LaPMET and INL, pushing them up as a reference national research centers for phononics and ultrafast dynamic studies, providing experimental conditions to research centers abroad. In this way, the project contributes to meeting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals, of the United Nations.
