Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (FCT_CPCA_2022_01), grant 2022.15910.CPCA.A1. Funded amount: EUR 1,239.52, as stated by the source. Runs 2023-03-14 to 2023-12-31. Keywords: Quantum Materials, Quasiperiodicity., flatbands., Exact sciences, Exact sciences/Physical sciences. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-07-19); national funding data, not CORDIS; selected because its keywords name quantum. Abstract given by the source: Quasiperiodic/moiré systems host a plethora of exotic quantum phenomena from correlated physics and topology to localization. A recent paradigmatic example is the discovery of correlated insulating phases and superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) - two stacked graphene layers with a relative twist angle. At a special angle, tBLG develops a very narrow band, where the exotic correlated phases were experimentally observed. For generic angles, translational invariance is broken and the system is quasiperiodic. In [2D Mater. 9, 011001 (2022)], we have recently shown that incommensurability effects, that are often neglected, are of key importance in the narrow-band regime of tBLG, in the absence of interactions, creating sub-ballistic states that are delocalized in momentum-space (not possible in the periodic case). Our results imply that an accurate study of interacting tBLG should take into account incommensurability effects. To capture these effects in interacting tBLG, we developed a band-projection algorithm (BPA) that allows us to simulate significantly larger systems than alternative methods. In the first stage, we will test the regimes of validity of the BPA in simpler 1D quasiperiodic systems. In these, critical phases can be engineered, hosting eigenstates delocalized in real and momentum space, in direct analogy with what we observed for tBLG. We hope that this project will shed light on the origin of the exotic correlated phases of narrow-band tBLG.
