Project funded by Research Council of Finland, grant 341913. Participating organisations named by the source: Aalto University. Funded amount: EUR 497,280, as stated by the source. Runs 2021-09-01 to 2025-08-31. Keywords: Physical sciences. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-07-23); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Low-dimensional systems facilitate various types of topologically stabilized excitations, such as fractionalized particles, carriers on edge states, composite fermions etc. Among different kinds of low-dimensional structures, a carbon nanotube (CNT) presents an excellent example of a substrate on which topological defects in an adsorbed atomic helium layer can be created and stabilized into a quasi-2D solid. The finite amount of point defects, vacancies, are stable down to zero temperature, because these vacancies are due to topologically induced frustration, i.e. due to mismatch between the chiral CNT lattice and the superlattice structure of the adsorbed helium that favors the 1/3 filling of the graphite lattice. In this project we investigate the implications of topologically induced defects in helium-CNT systems. We will investigate the mobility of defects on the chiral CNT substrate and engineer our setting so that the theoretically-anticipated supersolidity will be observed.
