Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (FCT_CPCA_2020_01), grant CPCA/A0/7348/2020. Funded amount: EUR 615, as stated by the source. Runs 2021-01-01 to 2021-12-31. Keywords: Optics, Quantum Optics, Exact sciences, Exact sciences/Physical sciences. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-07-19); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Light-atom interaction in near-resonant regimes can drive the quantum state of each atom (call it the internal degrees of freedom), and produce a non-trivial nonlinear response to an optical beam. However, due to dephasing and decoherence processes typical of the quantum scales, these effects are most noticeable on gases rather than on solids, and at lower temperatures rather than higher ones - the so-called cold atomic clouds, or in the ultracold regime, Bose-Einstein Condensates. Entering such low-temperature regimes, with atoms at smaller velocities, optomechanical forces become more noticeable, meaning that light-matter interaction not only governs the optical response of the media but also affects the motion of the atoms itself. Optical trapping, Doppler effect and Rydberg blockade are examples of the complex interplay between internal and external degrees of freedom, which means that a complete description of the phenomena involved requires robust numerical simulations that often fall beyond the computational limits of standard machines due to the high-dimensionality of the simulation system. This project aims at this challenge seeking a timely solution for research in this optical systems, leveraging previously developed tools on HPC environments to deploy an efficient digital twin. The outputs may shed new light in the non-equilibrium regime of these quantum fluids, from pattern-formation to turbulence.
