Project funded by Research Council of Finland, grant 369367. Participating organisations named by the source: Aalto University. Funded amount: EUR 728,021, as stated by the source. Runs 2025-09-01 to 2029-08-31. Keywords: Physical sciences. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-07-23); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Achieving control over the quantum properties of materials is a key research area that would enable the realization of novel quantum technologies. The recent discovery of 2D van der Waals multiferroics enables us to envision a new generation of functional multiferroic devices integrated within other van der Waals materials to achieve magnetoelectrical control over their quantum properties. However, the experimental realization of functional quantum materials based on multiferroics has not yet been achieved due to the lack of theoretical designs and computational models that can guide the experiments. In this project, I will theoretically design functional quantum materials based on multiferroic van der Waals heterostructures. This will enable control of the materials quantum properties using electric fields, boosting opportunities to create new quantum technologies. The project will be carried out at Aalto University, keeping Finland at the forefront of the second quantum revolution.
