Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2008-04432_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: Chalmers University of Technology. Funded amount: SEK 2,025,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2009-01-01 to 2011-12-31. Keywords: Oklassificerat, Unclassified. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-06); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: We aim at studying the low temperature excitation spectra of High critical Temperature Superconductors (HTS) by using two-level quantum systems. We will use an unbiased HTS Josephson junction, acting as a two level system, embedded in a resonator. When operating at the optimal point, the coherence and relaxation time of this system is insensitive to any kind of external noise except the intrinsic one coming from the junction. This experiment will therefore deliver detailed information about the quasiparticle spectrum of HTS, giving access to unresolved issues on the nature of superconductivity in such novel systems. The feasibility of this research is based on our recent findings that Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling and energy level quantization, quite surprisingly, can be observed in HTS Josephson junctions. In this project we propose to take advantage of the new opportunities offered by the unconventional d-wave symmetry in HTS. We will explore new concepts and model systems which could possibly lead to innovative applications. The focus will be on fundamental aspects of the dynamics and the mutual interactions of half flux quanta (semifluxons), completely new objects in solid state physics. Semifluxons have huge potentials: they can be used to construct classical and quantum bits for novel computer concepts, tunable photonic crystals, and to study the quantum physics of a large spin system. This study will also help to get new hints about the role of dissipation in HTS.
