Operation co-funded by EU cohesion policy (European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)) under the programme Multi-regional Spain - ERDF (2014ES16RFOP002), managing authority: Subdirección General de Gestión del FEDER, de la Dirección General de Fondos Europeos del Ministerio de Hacienda.. The source names no beneficiary for this operation. Location: Barcelona Province (NUTS ES511); Spain. Budget: total eligible expenditure EUR 311,065.56; EU co-financing EUR 155,532.78 (co-financing rate 50%), as stated by the source. Runs 2016-03-10 to 2019-12-31. Summary from Kohesio (English machine translation by the source): The objective of this project is to enable the automated and integrated manufacture of large-scale graphene-based electronics (wilder) to produce optical sensors for quality control and safety application in the food industry. The combination of materials, with graphene assuming the role of means of transport and quantum points that of photosensitive elements, allows to increase the gain of optical detectors and consequently, manufacture fast photo detectors ( 105) thanks to the speed of the loads (over 104 cm²/Vs). In addition, extremely sensitive optical detectors and image sensors can be achieved. These sensors have been demonstrated by ICFO at the level of industrial prototypes using graphene of the highest quality, manufactured by Graphenea. Graphene has to be transferred from the copper support in which it grows on the CMOS sensor, producing the devices one unit at a time, since the transfer process is very delicate and can introduce defects and irregularities in the operation of the devices, and greatly complicates the reproducibility of the manufacturing process of the products. One of the biggest challenges in the graphene industry, in view of the large-scale production of devices including this new material, is the optimisation of a process of manufacturing whole wafers of graphene devices. In this field, Graphenea is recognised as the pioneering company and most likely to succeed. The alliance of these two entities has the potential to advance the commercialisation of electronic products based on graphene and to consolidate the strategic advantage of Spain in the commercialisation of products based on this novel material.
