Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (Concurso para Financiamento de Projetos de Investigação Científica e Desenvolvimento Tecnológico em Todos os Domínios Ci), grant PTDC/FIS-OTI/32257/2017. Funded amount: EUR 35,984.50, as stated by the source. Runs 2018-07-01 to 2022-06-30. Keywords: Nanophotonics, Nanomaterials, Quatum theory of light-matter interaction, Sensors, Exact sciences. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-07-23); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Among the cornerstones for the future wellbeing, economic growth and security of Europe are technologies based on nanotechnologies, photonics and the laws of quantum physics. However, there are phenomena occurring in light-matter interaction at nanometer length scales and femtosecond time scales are currently not well understood. For example, the interaction of photons with single quantum systems under ambient conditions is typically very weak and difficult to control in the solid-state nanostructures. These deficiencies have a direct and severe impact on creating a bridge between quantum physics and nanomaterials and photonic devices. The vision behind this R&D program is the development of new ideas, novel materials, and innovative techniques to control the interaction between light and matter at will. This research program includes the development of theoretical and supercomputing simulation tools targeted at modeling and control quantum light-matter interactions, as well as, the fabrication and combination of novel materials (e.g. optical metamaterials, epsilon-near-zero materials, Graphene, Silicene, Phosphorene, Fullerenes, Fullerites, nanotubes, nanodots, nanobuds, nanoribbons and topological insulators) into nanomaterials and optical devices that can be applied in optical sensing, capable of generating economical value in the short term, but also building on human capital, know-how and infrastructure already existing in Portugal and in the Galicia-Norte Portugal euroregion, which in the future allow to address other problems in Quantum Nanophotonics. The program focuses on development of chemical (with emphasis on Hydrogen and Hydrocarbons) and electric and magnetic field sensors for industrial and commercial applications in safety and, monitoring and control. Nanotechnology and Photonics used in these sensors are Key Enabling Technologies and therefore have uses in fields as diverse as alternative energies based on hydrogen, chemical industry, high power [shortened; the full text is on the OpenAIRE page]
