Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2018-03803_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: Stockholm University. Funded amount: SEK 3,560,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2019-01-01 to 2022-12-31. Keywords: Naturvetenskap, Natural Sciences, Fysik, Physical Sciences, Subatomär fysik, Subatomic Physics. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-04); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Observations suggest that our universe initially expands exponentially, slows down, and then starts expanding exponentially again, now at a much slower rate. The project aims to study a fundamental theory for such processes, which can unify cosmological history and replace phenomenological models known to fail at short distance scales.A particular class of particle theory differs from all others by naturally acccomodating an exponentially expanding universe. This class of theories actually have two different uniform acceleration rates, and can switch irreversibly from one rate to the other. Such switches can be studied using quantum field theory tools in place of gravity methods. In the project tools to probe the switch will be developed, first in simpler settings, second in the evaluation of correlation functions of an auxiliary quantum fileld theory and finally in translating correlation functions in the auxiliary theory to primordial cosmological fluctuations. The applicant, a project postdoc, two PhD students and international collaborators will calculate and compute using quantum field theory methods. We may also find experimentalists who can simulate the auxiliary system by engineering an optical lattice. The research is expected to produce a working toy model for a qualitative global history of the universe. This kind of model is quite constrained but can be improved to better fit detailed history and particle content.
