Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (Concurso de avaliação no âmbito do Programa Plurianual de Financiamento de Unidades de I&D (2017/2018) - Financiamento B), grant UIDB/04968/2020. Funded amount: EUR 546,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2020-01-01 to 2024-12-31. Keywords: Quantum Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, Materials and Photonics for Biomedicine, Multifunctional Nanostructures. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-07-23); national funding data, not CORDIS; selected because its keywords name quantum. Abstract given by the source: 10.2 Summary in English for general dissemination purposes One of the central ideas in science and technology is to understand and control the properties of matter in relation with its composition and structure. We witness a growing interest in the fundamental properties and applications of materials, specially when electronic quantum correlations give rise to collective behaviours not found in normal materials. Also, when structuring matter at the nanoscale, such ultra-small parts of material often behave very differently from their bulk counterparts, offering novel technological applications using optical, electric and/or magnetic properties. Fundamental research on quantum and nanomaterials hold new experimental and technological challenges that are intrinsically related to their complexity, reduced spatial scale and/or their response at ultra-short timescales. Moreover, materials can respond differently when subjected to different external stimuli, like low/high temperature, magnetic/electric fields or even external pressure. Therefore, the ability to experimentally control external parameters permits to get insight into complex physics problems in particular in matters related to spin, structure and their dynamics. This approach is central in the 2018-22 activity plan. In this period, IFIMUP, through the lead of the Network of Extreme Conditions Laboratories (NECL) will profit from the reinforcement and renewal of its experimental facilities, moving into a privileged position at the international level. IFIMUPs affirms its broad scientific goal, namely to perform state-of-the art advanced research and training in fundamental and applied physics, having at its disposal a broad range of experimental conditions such as from low/high temperatures, high electrical and/or magnetic fields, high pressures or ultra-short times. The institute will exploit synergies created in the last years to make decisive contributions to the national scientific and technological [shortened; the full text is on the OpenAIRE page]
