Abstract given by the source: This year a Quantum Coherence Consortium at LU was established. The initiative is inspired by a recent discovery that quantum coherence can survive unexpectedly long time in some biological systems, suggesting that nature is using quantum optimization in making natural light harvesting more efficient. These new ideas are based on the interference effects enabling conceptually new optimization strategies for energy and electron transfer. Analogous approaches are currently entering material science envisaging radically new strategies to use coherence for controlling the transfer processes in material function. The long-term goal of the consortium is to learn how to build materials where the individual system parts would self-organize to act in a concerted coherent fashion enabling totally new and most likely unexpected possibilities in many fields of science and technology. By joining efforts of key research groups in Lund, the Consortium covers expertise essential for addressing and resolving issues of controlling quantum aspects of optimization in material function. On May 30-th 2012 a minisymposium is organized in Lund to announce the Consortium ?to the World.? We have invited six outstanding speakers covering the main areas of the topic of quantum coherence. Besides the invited speakers, even consortium members will be presenting their work. The symposium will be open for all interested researchers.
