Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (FCT_CPCA_2021_01), grant 2021.09830.CPCA. Funded amount: EUR 615, as stated by the source. Runs 2022-03-03 to 2023-07-31. Keywords: Five Dimensional Yang-Mills, Non-renormalizable Quantum Field Theories, Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics, Monte Carlo Simulation, Criticality, Exact sciences. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-07-20); national funding data, not CORDIS; selected because its keywords name quantum. Abstract given by the source: Current insights on non-renormalizable Quantum Field Theories (NRQFTs) are scarce. These may or not be physical, but the absence of analytical tools has made their study mostly inaccessible. Meanwhile, the idea that General Relativity (GR) may be a fundamental NRQFT is still an open question. Under this paradigm, a detailed study of non-trivial fixed-points in 5D Yang-Mills QFTs is an outstanding problem that may help shed light onto the true nature of GR. Such studies have been attempted before, using analytical methods or numerical methods. In the latter, one highlights the use of powerful Monte Carlo (MC) simulations in lattice versions of the theory. In a previous numerical work by the PI [arxiv:2103.15242] a transition region has been unveiled that requires a two-parameter tuning to yield 2nd-order criticality. The latter result contradicts the predictions of a one-parameter controlled criticality obtained previously by eps-expansions around d=4. In addition, an atypical finite-size scaling of the entropy, within the thermodynamically unstable region, has been identified for these models hinting at their nontrivial nature. In this project, we will further explore this work line by doing optimized MC simulations on lattice 5D Yang-Mills models to gain insight into our previous findings. A possible source of the unexpected relevant parameter can lie in nonperturbative instanton effects, which in 5D become dynamical particles (monopoles) with a role yet to be determined.
