Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2013-05839_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: Lund University. Funded amount: SEK 3,336,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2014-01-01 to 2017-12-31. Keywords: Naturvetenskap, Natural Sciences, Fysik, Physical Sciences, Den kondenserade materiens fysik, Condensed Matter Physics. Abstract given by the source: This project aims to create a source of single photons and entangled photon pairs in order to advance research on optical quantum information processing. I will use a new quantum dot (QD) system, the nanowire QD, which has shown great potential as being highly controllable. However, the nanowire QDs lack some properties which are fundamental for quantum information applications; entangled photon pair generation, coherent single photon emission and room temperature operation. In this proposal I outline a plan to solve these issues by exploiting the unique features of the nanowire QD system; controllable dimensions and strain situation as well as electrical and optical access to the QD from the side. In order to generate entangled photons the exciton fine structure splitting (FSS) will be minimised. A study of FSS as a function of QD dimensions and strain situation will be preformed. In addition external means of control, such as an electric field applied via contacts on the side facets of the nanowire, will also be used to minimise the FSS. The coherence of the light source will be improved by resonant optical excitation. I will study how the wave guiding properties of the nanowire can be utilised to achieve excitation and collection of the emission along orthogonal axes. Room temperature operation will be achieved by creating a QD of suitable size and material which is suitably strained to achieve strong enough confinement for the charge carriers.
