Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2018-06011_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: Lund University. Funded amount: SEK 3,000,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2019-01-01 to 2021-12-31. Keywords: Naturvetenskap, Natural Sciences, Kemi, Chemical Sciences, Fysikalisk kemi, Physical Chemistry. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-05); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Multiple exciton generation (MEG) in semiconductor nanocrystals, so called quantum dots (QD), can break the Shockley-Queisser thermodynamic efficiency limit (~32%) of the conventional solar cells. MEG has been demonstrated in functioning QD solar cells (QDSC) but the overall efficiency of the cells remains low (~3%). We propose to develop a set of QD solar solutions based on emerging transition metal ion doping methodology. In this way we will heal the current QDSC bottlenecks like poor charge carrier mobility, inefficient multiple exciton generation and collection. Such challenge can hardly be tackled by a single group and requires collaboration covering a broad set of competences in material synthesis, device fabrication and advanced analyses of photo-induced processes in the materials and the devices. The Chinese partner has long-standing expertise in QD synthesis, doping and QDSC fabrication while the Swedish partner is renowned for their fundamental studies of photoexcitation and charge carrier dynamics in solar materials. Via detailed characterization of materials and dynamic processes including MEG in solar cell components, the Lund group will provide feedback for materials’ design by Beijing group for proper optimization strategies for the QD doping and QDSC fabrication. The aim is to demonstrate MEG-enabled QDSCs with power conversion efficiency approaching 15%. In this way we take a serious step towards drastically improving the efficiency of such solar technology.
