Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (FCT_CPCA_2023_01), grant 2024.07005.CPCA.A1. Funded amount: EUR 1,306.17, as stated by the source. Runs 2024-08-01 to 2025-01-31. Keywords: near term quantum algorithms, noisy quantum simulations, space efficient quantum simulators, Engineering and technology. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-07-20); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Quantum algorithmic research for near-term NISQ systems focuses on hybrid quantum plus classical iterative approaches, allowing for shallower quantum circuits. Classical simulators are typically used to evaluate and assess these algorithms. Two challenges arise from current practices: I) These simulations seldom consider noise, although their motivation arises from real systems being noisy! The circuits' shallowness is taken as a guarantee of noise robustness. II) Memory requirements of quantum systems' classical simulators grow exponentially with the number of qubits, preventing the simulation of large programs. This project addresses two goals associated with these challenges: G1 - Assess NISQ-aware algorithms using simulators that include realistic noise models. Such simulations are computationally very demanding, both in time and space. HPC resources are required to soften time requirements and run such workloads in useful time up to a reasonable accuracy level. G2 - Develop highly parallel space-efficient simulators, based on recasting simulation as a sum of paths, allowing evaluation of the newly proposed algorithms up to hundreds of qubits. This proposal is a follow-up to project 2023.09537.CPCA, under which the team was allowed 100 000 CPU.core hours. These resources were completely used for four main tasks: a) Development of a quantum circuit compiler b) Simulation of probabilistic noise-aware algorithms for quantum amplitude estimation c) Simulation of a hybrid combinatorial optimization algorithm to solve the power generation unit commitment problem c) Development of a path-based memory efficient simulator of quantum circuits. Circuits up to 4096 qubits were successfully simulated. Access to additional high-performance computation resources is essential to ensure the continuation of these projects and their successful conclusion.
