Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2011-04300_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: KTH, Royal Institute of Technology. Funded amount: SEK 2,850,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2012-01-01 to 2014-12-31. Keywords: Naturvetenskap, Natural Sciences, Fysik, Physical Sciences, Den kondenserade materiens fysik, Condensed Matter Physics. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-05); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: We will develop and apply a measurement technique called Intermodulation Spectroscopy in new directions for Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and for quantum limited microwave measurement. The method is based on the acquisition and analysis of the high-order intermodulation (frequency mixing) products of two drive tones applied to a nonlinear oscillator. With this method we gain much more information in a given measurement time than with traditional methods which use the only one drive tone. Our unique and home-built intermodulation lockin analyzer will be further refined and extend to include synthesized drive frequency combs, representing complex drive waveforms. Algorithms for analysis of the intermodulation spectrum will be developed which reveal frequency-dependent forces acting on the oscillator. Our application of this method has been a major breakthrough in the field of AFM, and we are currently world leading in our ability to create very high resolution, quantitative force-volume data. We will continue to work on AFM, but our intention is to extend this method to microwave frequencies and low temperatures, for the study quantum correlations and multi-photon mixing processes in nonlinear quantum circuits. VR support is extremely important for the continuation and expansion of this highly successful research program, which has generated several high quality publications and invited talks since its inception in 2008.
