Abstract given by the source: Today’s society depends on the availability of faster and more energy-efficient information processing. In the past half-century, this demand has been satisfied by semiconductor technology, which followed the trend dictated by Moore’s law. However, this trend is coming to an end, and new fundamental ideas are needed to sustain technological progress. One such idea is to replace conventional semiconductors with so-called quantum materials, i.e. materials where emergent properties can be observed and used to create a technology that is not only more powerful but also more energy-efficient.While these properties make those materials extremely appealing, they also extremely difficult to understand, as they cannot be be predicted from the properties of the basic constituents. Luckily, the recent appearance of two new types of coherent electromagnetic radiation, in the THz and in the x-rays regions, has provided researchers access to a whole new set of experimental capabilities to investigate these new fundamentals ideas in condensed matter physics. This research proposal aims at understanding and implementing coherent control of three different types of quantum materials using these novel experimental tools. The proposed experiments are challenging and explore unchartered territories, but if successful, they will significantly advance the understanding of quantum materials, pushing the boundaries of our understanding of modern condensed matter physics.
