Abstract given by the source: Modeling of and experiments on the collective interaction between charged particles has a manifold of applications. Ranging from nanoscale devices to the astrophysical realm, such systems can display both unexpected and surprising behaviour. Over the last fifty years a vast literature has developed and touched upon topics of relevance for classical plasma systems as well as condensed matter systems. However, for many nonequilibrium systems currently becoming experimentally accessible, such descriptions may not be sufficient. The nonlinear aspects of classical plasma systems has to be combined with the, under many circumstance, quantum mechanical nature of condensed matter systems. One example of such is next-generation laser-matter interactions. In such environments both the quantum nature of the matter constituents as well as the nonlinear behaviour of their interactions can be of great importance. The combination of relativistic and quantum effects gives rise to pair production and nonlinear quantum vacuum effects, and as such poses a computationally difficult QED problem for realistic strong field parameters. Here, computationally viable models will be developed. In particular, focus will be given to next-generation high-intensity laser physics and current laser-matter interactions where analytical models, numerical schemes, and collaborative high-intensity laser experiments will combine to further strengthen the ongoing research activities.
