Operation co-funded by EU cohesion policy (European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)) under the programme EU Structural Funds Investments - LT - ERDF/ESF/CF/YEI (2014LT16MAOP001), managing authority: Finansų ministerija. The source names no beneficiary for this operation. Location: Vilnius County (NUTS LT011); Lithuania. Budget: total eligible expenditure EUR 687,971.45; EU co-financing EUR 687,971.45 (co-financing rate 100%), as stated by the source. Runs 2020-07-10 to 2023-08-31. Source: Kohesio, EU cohesion policy projects managed by national and regional authorities (not CORDIS); selected because its title uses a quantum word. Summary from Kohesio (English machine translation by the source): Today, the widespread use of silicon solar cells unfortunately only uses less than half of the photon energy in ultraviolet, blue and green colors. Most of the energy turns into heat, which is not only useless, but also reduces the efficiency of the elements. The aim of this project is to create efficient composite solar cells based on Si cells and quantum decomposition layers. This layer would convert one high-energy photon into two low-energy photons, which silicon solar cells effectively convert into electricity. A thin layer of such a photon “degradable” material formed on the Si solar cell can increase its performance by several percent. During the project it is planned to develop a material that effectively decomposes photons and has long-term stability and the technology of forming its layer on the surface of Si. Such material will be developed on the basis of perovskite-structured materials by alloying them with iterby and other elements. Perovskite will absorb high-energy photon, transfer its energy to iterby ion, which emits two low-energy photons. By changing the structure of the material, the concentration of alloy materials, film forming technologies will be aimed at optimising all actions of light absorption, energy transmission, radiation and direction to silicon, in order to maximise the performance of Si solar cells and ensure the long-term stability of the created material. The devices developed will be optimised for Central Europe’s medium solar exposure conditions. The project will carry out three main activities: 1) Research and optimisation of quantum degradation mechanism; 2) search for long-term stabilisers for quantum decomposition materials; 3) Formation of quantum decomposition layers on the surface of silicon solar cells. We hope to achieve more than 80 % quantum decomposition performance, more than a year’s material stability and an increase in the productivity of silicon solar cells by more than three absolute percent.
