Project funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation (Investigators), grant NNF20OC0061866. Participating organisations named by the source: KU University of Copenhagen. Runs n/a to 2027-09-30. Keywords: Nanotechnology, Photonics, Physics, Quantum Technologies. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-08-01); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: The idea that an object visible to the naked eye can be in two places at the same time appears bizarre to our mind, given the absence of such experiences in our daily lives. And yet quantum mechanics, one of the most successful scientific theories ever conceived of, predicts exactly that. It is the aim of this project to realize exactly such a superposition state, of a millimeter-sized membrane that vibrates like a timpani drum head. To make this happen, we will bring three components together: One, a force that can simultaneously push and pull, exerted by a quantum magnet that occurs in diamond. Two, a phononic membrane whose motion is undisturbed by virtually all other influences. And three, precise measurement of the membrane position using a laser. Along the way, we will learn many lessons on the limitations and potential of force measurements in a regime where quantum mechanics matters – for example, for a new kind of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at the molecular scale. _x000D_

AI-assisted summary: The "Phononic Quantum Sensors" project, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, aims to achieve a superposition state of a vibrating membrane using a quantum magnet, a phononic membrane, and precise laser measurements. It is set to run until September 30, 2027. Suggested technology pillar: sensing. Generated by AI from the public source text; it may contain errors and the original source is authoritative.
