In the first period, we have designed, built and implemented a new microfabricated ion trap. We have also developed a new method to use optical tweezers to perform quantum logic gates, based on effects that go beyond the paraxial approximation. We have upgraded a method to reduce aberrations using spatial light modulators to be used in trapped ions. This allows us to deliver and align optical tweezers on trapped ions with smallest possible foci. We have increased the knowledge of the atomic structure of Yb+ using spectroscopy. The investigated transitions can be used for optimizing tweezer delivery in trapped ions.
