Project funded by French National Research Agency (ANR), grant ANR-08-BLAN-0074. Participating organisations named by the source: Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives; COMMISSARIAT A LENERGIE ATOMIQUE ET AUX ENERGIES ALTERNATIVES - CENTRE DETUDES NUCLEAIRES SACLAY; CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE - DELEGATION REGIONALE RHONE-ALPES SECTEUR ALPES. Funded amount: EUR 425,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2009-01-01 to n/a. Abstract given by the source: During the last 25 years, electrical circuits based on Josephson junctions have progressively entered the realm of the quantum world, with the demonstration of quantum tunneling, energy level quantization, and of other phenomena previously reserved to the microscopic world of atoms or electrons. These new artificial macroscopic atoms became even more attractive with the surge of quantum computing, and the active search of quantum bits suitable for making quantum processors. Josephson quantum bit circuits with sufficient quantum coherence to allow for complex manipulations have been implemented since year 2000, and the partners involved in the present project are contributing to this field within the framework of the European project Eurosqip. An important motivation for this new project is that qubit research requests to focus on developing an elementary quantum processor, and to leave aside major issues on the quantum behavior of Josephson circuits. Our aim is precisely to investigate the quantum properties of various Josephson circuits for the sake of their own interest, for their particular relevance to the foundations of quantum physics, and for their applications in other fields than quantum information.
