Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2017-04287_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: Lund University. Funded amount: SEK 3,200,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2018-01-01 to 2021-12-31. Keywords: Naturvetenskap, Natural Sciences, Fysik, Physical Sciences, Den kondenserade materiens fysik, Condensed Matter Physics. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-04); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: This project shall develop and optimize new design strategies for Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) operating at Terahertz frequencies. While QCLs are nowadays well established commercial devices for mid and long wavelength infrared radiation, their operation in the THz range (1.2-5 THz) is still limited to temperatures below 200 K. Operation close to room temperature would allow for cost-effective hand-held devices with a large range of applications. In direct cooperation with experimental groups at ETH Zürich and NRC Ottawa, in this project two different approaches shall be undertaken to reach this goal: (i) We will study structures with only two quantum wells per module. Here preliminary results already demonstrate a significant improvement of operation temperature by more than 40 K. (ii) Going beyond the general paradigm, we consider structures which operate in a region of negative differential conductivity. This requires a good understanding of domain formation under lasing conditions, where we will develop the underlying theory. The proposed research is based on our world-leading competence in quantum-kinetic simulations of QCLs with nonequilibrium Green´s functions allowing a quantitative description of these devices.
