Abstract given by the source: The rapidly increasing experimental control of nanometer size systems, together with novel theorems for fluctuations out of equilibrium, ubiquitous at the nanoscale, have in recent years spurred research on thermodynamics in small systems. The grand challenge is to take this field of research into the quantum regime. Experimentally, solid state nanostructures at cryogenic temperatures stand out as particularly suitable to meet this challenge, due to the demonstrated high-level control of systems ranging from quantum bits to quantum conductors. This strongly motivates developing quantum thermodynamics (QTD) theory for nanoscale electronic systems, both to investigate novel, fundamental physics phenomena and to guide, model and analyse experiments. We propose to theoretically investigate three important and timely topics of QTD in solid state nanoscale systems. The topics cover single energy quantum detection with temperature fluctuations, quantum heat engines coupled to finite size reservoirs, and electronic coherence and entanglement in quantum heat transport. The aim of the project is twofold. First, to generate new generate new knowledge of quantum properties of energy flow and conversion in nanoscale electronic systems, and second, based on the new knowledge propose and analyse ground-breaking, proof-of-principle nanoscale QTD experiments. Successful realizations of the proposed experiments would constitute major breakthroughs in QTD and open up for future applications.
