Project funded by Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), grant EXCELLENCE/0421/0019. Participating organisations named by the source: The Cyprus Institute; University of Cyprus. Funded amount: EUR 200,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2022-04-01 to 2024-04-01. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-07-23); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: The project "Quantum Computing for Lattice Gauge Theories" (QC4LGT) will establish an Excellence Hub in quantum computing, in order to study lattice gauge theories with current noisy, intermediate-scale quantum hardware in regimes that are inaccessible with conventional classical numerical methods. Using quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions in the presence of a topological term and a chemical potential as a test bench, we will develop novel hybrid quantum-classical algorithms suitable for addressing lattice gauge theories beyond 1+1 dimensions. This will allow us to use quantum hardware to explore the phase structure of quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions in the presence of a chemical potential and a topological term, which is inaccessible with conventional lattice methods. To achieve this goal, QC4LGT foresees advances in computational methods for noisy, intermediate-scale quantum devices. A particular focus will be on the advancement of error mitigation methods suitable to deal with the effects of noise on current quantum hardware and the development of mathematical tools for designing suitable ansatz circuits for gauge theories. The consortium for QC4LGT reflects these aspects, bringing together experts in quantum computing and lattice field theory from the Cyprus Institute and in large-scale numerical lattice computations from the University of Cyprus. Moreover, the foreign research organizations DESY Zeuthen, Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, and the University of Bath will provide vital expertise in quantum methods for lattice field theories, particle physics, error mitigation, and mathematics.
