Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2013-05257_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: University of Gothenburg. Funded amount: SEK 637,497, as stated by the source. Runs 2014-01-01 to 2016-12-31. Keywords: Naturvetenskap, Natural Sciences, Fysik, Physical Sciences, Atom- och molekylfysik och optik, Atom and Molecular Physics and Optics. Abstract given by the source: Future use of solar energy in, e.g., photovoltaics and fuel cells, calls for pushing the understanding of light-matter interactions to the nanometer scale and to the quantum regime. While nanoplasmonics is a common research subject these days, little attention has been paid to the genuine quantum-nature of surface plasmon, a collective electronic excitation, and its interactions with electrons. This project strives for a quantum-mechanical description of surface plasmons and their associated electron transfer and energy conversion on the surfaces of nanostructures. The objectives are to: i) gain understanding on the quantum light-matter interactions at electronic to atomic scales, and ii) explore the possibility to utilize quantum plasmonic properties in controlling electron transfer and energy conversion processes in the aforementioned areas. On a platform of earlier solved relevant problems and extensive experiences gained in related areas, three related projects are proposed to reach these goals: 1) quantum description of plasmon excitation and charge transfer; 2) dynamics of plasmonic damping and light emission; and 3) coupling of plasmon excitation to photocatalytic reactions. The outcome from these studies will advance our understanding in the coupled plasmon-molecule systems. In addition, it is also promising to provide guiding principles for enhancing energy conversion in solar cells and for the control of photoinduced surface reactions mediated by surface plasmons.
