Abstract given by the source: Detection of quantum states in nanoscale systems is of great scientific interest. This is particularly emphasized by the growing evidence that the complexity of nanoscale systems is intrinsic to their highly tunable functionalities. These materials are subject to strong electron correlations in combination with strong electronic coupling to a multitude of degrees of freedom, e.g. lattice, spin, and local vibrational modes. New tools, such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) combined with electron spin resonance (ESR) provides the ability to manipulate single spins, something which is crucial in spintronics and quantum information. Lately, there has also been a growing interest in using spin-polarized STM for direct detection of spin structures, as well as utilizing the inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) for detection of local spatial variations in electron-boson coupling in molecular systems. The all-embracing goal of this project is to study fundamental processes that are important for detection and invisibility of quantum states in nanoscale systems and their coupling to other degrees of freedom in correlated electronic materials. Physical mechanisms include: coupling to lattice and spin degrees of freedom, coupling to local bosonic (vibrational) modes, sources of spin-flip scattering, transport, and dynamics.
