Abstract given by the source: The quest for a sustainable energy production and storage as well as the ongoing miniaturization and close-packing of components in electronic devices provide, from different perspectives, strong motivation for basic research on thermoelectric (TE) transport. During the last two decades, the rapid development of nanotechnology has opened up for novel approaches to improved performance of TE-devices. Fundamentally, at the nanoscale physical laws are governed by quantum mechanics. This emphasizes the importance of a quantum approach to nanocale TE to identify key areas for future applications but also to explore novel physical effects in coupled electric and thermal quantum transport. Here we propose to theoretically investigate three important and timely topics of quantum TE-transport in mesoscopic and nanoscale systems. The topics cover symmetry breaking in TE-transport, energy emission of electron-on-demand sources and heat engines based on nanoscale conductors in microwave cavities. The aim of the project is twofold. First, to generate new knowledge of basic quantum phenomena in TE-transport, and second, based on the new knowledge, to propose and analyze ground-breaking, proof-of-principle TE-transport experiments. Successful realizations of the proposed experiments would constitute major breakthroughs in quantum TE-transport and open up for future applications.
