Abstract given by the source: The objective of the proposal is to perform theoretical research on quantum information processing at the nano scale. The main aim is to understand the properties of electronic states and correlations in nanoscale systems and how these properties can be harnessed for quantum information and quantum computation. This interdisciplinary field of research is of fundamental as well as applied interest. Our proposal is focused on a number of key areas. We propose to investigate the effect of finite temperature and decoherence on the generation and detection of individual and correlated, or entangled, states of individual electrons. This is a prerequisite to understand recent experiments aiming for a detection of electronic entanglement. Of large importance is also to investigate schemes for an efficient, time dependent generation and coherent transfer of entanglement by pumping of electrons. Another key area is the complete characterization of one and two electron quantum states, in both the orbital and spin degree of freedom. Such a tomographic state reconstruction is particularly interesting when formulated in terms of experimentally available transport measurement, average electrical currents and low-frequency current correlators. We moreover propose to investigate characterization and extraction of entangled electrons in interacting nanosystems, such as magnetic nanoparticles and coupled quantum dots.
