Abstract given by the source: In 2008, I proposed that gauge theories possess a previously unknown duality that relates spacetime degrees of freedom (kinematical quantities of particles) with internal-space degrees of freedoms (quantum color charges). This duality between color and kinematics has a profound consequence for gravity. It provides a precise mathematical mechanism for viewing gravitons as double copies of gluons. While a large body of evidence supports the existence of the duality, there is as of yet no clear identification of the kinematical algebra that underlies the new structure. This research program seeks to find a complete description of the duality, embedding the spacetime degrees of freedom into a mathematical Lie Algebra. A mathematically consistent version of gravity is string theory, which replaces point-like particles with extended string-like particles. An open theoretical problem is whether the extended nature of the graviton is inevitable, or if point-like theories may also avoid UV divergences. Candidates for such finite theories can be found amongst the supergravity theories. Although prevailing beliefs suggest that N=8 supergravity is a UV divergent theory, calculations show that it is remarkably well behaved. Recent consensus points to a 7-loop divergence, which is intimately related to a potential divergence at 5 loops in D>4. This project will complete a decisive calculation that probes the UV behavior of N=8 supergravity using state-of-the-art techniques.
