Abstract given by the source: I seek a continuation of the VR-project “Quantum information: Multipartite entanglement”. The quantum information field is a flourishing field of interdisciplinary research, combining elements of quantum physics, computer science, information theory and atomic and molecular physics. It is presently moving towards larger systems and many-qubit applications, implying multipartite entanglement. In order to implement such systems using photons, two major problems have to be addressed; Decoherence and the weak interaction between photonic qubits. The remedy for the first problem is quantum error correction. We will focus on the issues of efficiency of codes, in particular channel and carrier adapted codes, and the possibility and efficiency of block coding. Presently these areas have received little attention although they appear central for the field to reach its full potential. We will also investigate hyperentanglement, e.g., entanglement in more than one degree of freedom to alleviate the need for nonlinear interaction. Presently only hyperentangled Bell-states have been discussed in the literature and experimentally demonstrated, showing that hyperentanglement will enable one to make a complete Bell-state analyzer without having to incorporate a CNOT-gate (or a similar non-linear, reversible gate). We hope to demonstrate other uses of photonic hyperentanglement since the generation of hyperentangled states is considerably easier than the implementation of CNOT-gates.
