Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Grant for positions or stipends), grant 2017-06179_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: KTH, Royal Institute of Technology. Funded amount: SEK 3,150,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2018-01-01 to 2020-12-31. Keywords: Naturvetenskap, Natural Sciences, Fysik, Physical Sciences, Atom- och molekylfysik och optik, Atom and Molecular Physics and Optics. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-04); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: The encryption techniques that are used in modern communication systems are threatened by the imminent introduction of the quantum computer. Quantum key distribution (QKD) is the only known alternative that can offer theoretically proven security. In this project we plan to experimentally investigate different QKD solutions with a focus on technology that can be vital building blocks in the future global quantum network. Our main focus is on continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) which uses weak coherent pulses. This method can be implemented with conventional telecom equipment and thus has a lot of potential towards commercialization. The main part of this project will be conducted at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Tokyo, Japan. However, the project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm (which is the administrating organization), where also parts of the time will be spent. NICT has laboratories with world leading communication equipment and access to both point-to-point and satellite based optical links. This project also hopes to initiate research collaboration between Sweden and Japan on QKD technologies. The project is planned over 3 years, where the first year is mainly focused on building the transmitter and receiver for CV-QKD, the second year focuses on QKD over fiber networks, and the final year is targeting satellite enabled QKD between two distant nodes.
