Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2018-04251_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: KTH, Royal Institute of Technology. Funded amount: SEK 4,470,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2018-12-01 to 2021-12-31. Keywords: Naturvetenskap, Natural Sciences, Fysik, Physical Sciences, Den kondenserade materiens fysik, Condensed Matter Physics. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-05); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: This project will advance our understanding of light detection with superconducting detectors, a highly promising detection technology. In this project we aim at establishing new nano-fabrication processes of superconducting nanostructures, perform fundamental studies, implement new validation schemes and use these quantum detectors in emerging fields of study. The final result of this project will be a new generation of detectors with unprecedented specifications: they will have detection efficiencies of 95 % with a time resolution of 1 ps, will have count rates exceeding 80 MHz and will have dark counts as low as 1 mHz. Detection will be demonstrated over a very large wavelength range from the visible all the way to 10 microns. These unprecedented performances will set a new standard in light detection and will enable a large palette of applications. Three specific applications will be demonstrated: atmospheric pollution sensing. neuromorphic quantum computing and photon number resolution. The impact of this project will be sizable on two fronts: the development of a complete microscopic theory of the detection process at work and the implementation of new devices in novel experiments, we will also make our devices available to a wide community of quantum physicists.
