Abstract given by the source: Quantum simulators have emerged as a fascinating area of research in recent years due to an enormous progress in cooling, trapping, and manipulating atoms. Especially systems of strongly interacting cold atoms in optical lattices have attracted massive attention, owing to the fact that these "clean" systems can serve as quantum simulators, i.e. mimicking theoretical models originating from the condensed matter community. Phenomena such as Mott-superfluid phase transitions and Anderson localization have been demonstrated utilizing these systems, while they remain unrealized in solids due to large amount of impurities. Even at the single particle level, quantum optical methods can simulate condensed matter systems. For example, a single atom confined inside an optical cavity, interacting with the quantized cavity field, may render a quantum simulator of Jahn-Teller or even Hall systems. I intend to study both cold atoms in optical lattices as well as single atoms coupled to cavity fields in the terms of quantum simulators. The main focus will be on the simulation of Hall effects and phonon-like physics.
