Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2009-03671_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: Stockholm University. Funded amount: SEK 1,950,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2010-01-01 to 2012-12-31. Keywords: Oklassificerat, Unclassified. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-06); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Systems of neutral atoms trapped in optical lattices has proved to be a uniquely flexible tool to engineer correlated quantum states in a laboratory. In this project we plan to explore quantum states of bosons in optical lattices with a special focus on situations where the system cannot be described by a single band model. Higher bands can become important in many different ways. Their inclusions becomes essential for example if the atom-atom interaction is strong, if the bandgaps are sufficiently small, if there is a coupling between the bands, if the temperature is comparable to the bandgap, or if the system is experimentally prepared on the higher bands. The physics on the higher bands is more rich and qualitatively different from the lowest band physics for numerous reasons. For example, if the cubic optical lattice is equally deep in all directions, the p-band has a three-fold degeneracy. This degeneracy makes it necessary to describe the system using more flavors opening up new possibilities for exotic quantum states such as, for example, unconventional superfluid states.
