Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2020-03412_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: Lund University. Funded amount: SEK 3,280,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2020-12-01 to 2024-11-30. Keywords: Naturvetenskap, Natural Sciences, Fysik, Physical Sciences, Den kondenserade materiens fysik, Condensed Matter Physics. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-05); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: In this theoretical project we will bring together two of the most active research fields in contemporary condensed matter physics and quantum science, expecting breakthroughs in both fields to arise from this union. In the first research field – superconductor-semiconductor hybrid structures – a novel superconducting state is achieved in a semiconductor nanostructures in contact with a superconductor. The second research field – quantum thermodynamics – strives to formulate thermodynamic laws for quantum systems, and to use quantum coherence and entanglement in new paradigms for thermodynamic machines. In the proposed project, we will develop protocols that reveal fundamental thermodynamic relations in the quantum regime by exploiting the special properties of superconductor-semiconductor hybrids, such as long coherence times, controllable quantum states, and, in the topological regime, a large ground state degeneracy and nonlocal and nonabelian quasiparticles. Conversely, we will develop ways of using quantum thermodynamics to reveal information about the superconductor-semiconductor hybrid structures, for example coherence times, environment couplings, ground state degeneracy and possible topological nature. The project goals are formulated to inspire future experiments. In addition, the project will develop theoretical methods for quantum transport and quantum dynamics of superconductor-semiconductor hybrids which will be of use for a broader theory community.
