Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT), grant 2023.02269.BD. Runs 2023-10-01 to 2027-09-30. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-07-18); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Quantum walks are an important class of quantum algorithms, providing several improvements over their classical counterparts, namely when integrated in a variety of algorithms and computational structures. If their characterization over undirected graphs is already well established, much less is known about the corresponding algorithms over oriented graphs. Indeed, within the community, this is emerging very recently as a hot research topic. This PhD project aims at exploring continuous-time quantum walks over directed and oriented graphs, from a double perspective: through simulation and analytically, resorting to Bessel functions. Secondly, these algorithms will be applied to develop more effective quantum versions of search and optimization problems, thus showing their potential for practical use. Finally, a formal calculi of algorithms for quantum walks will be proposed in the context of "categorical quantum mechanics". This will provide a specification and verification setting for classifying algorithms, proving their structural properties and study their composition.
