Abstract given by the source: Quantum devices operating at the single photon level constitute a fundamental building block for emerging technologies with profound impact on society, markets and everyday life. The project QuLEMON aims at the development of a scalable solid-state platform capable of generating and manipulating light at the quantum limit, relying on the unique properties of cuprous oxide (Cu2O). Intriguing condensed-matter phenomena have been demonstrated in this material, in particular giant Rydberg excitons showing signatures of quantum coherences and cold exciton gases exhibiting quantum-degenerate statistics. Here, we will develop new schemes for the generation and manipulation of single photons, studying excitons in Cu2O nanocrystals and their interactions down to the Rydberg blockade regime in confined nanoscale structures. The scalable integration of Cu2O with silicon photonic circuits will be elaborated, which will allow for versatile, miniaturized photonic devices that offer tunability by applying electric and strain fields. Moreover, hybrid architectures based hybrid Cu2O-2D material structures will be realized, opening up new opportunities for coupling ‘dark’ excitonic states in Cu2O to ‘bright’ excitonic transitions in 2D materials. The proposed research has broad implications for scalable quantum information processing, integrated nonlinear optics and Rydberg exciton physics.
