Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT), grant 2025.07305.BDANA. Runs 2025-10-01 to 2029-09-30. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-06-26); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Photonic systems stand out as a promising platform for quantum information processing, but existing photonic processors are small-scale, noisy and limited, still shy from the ultimate goal of building a universal, large-scale quantum computer. This project aims to explore architectures for longer-term, scalable photonic quantum computers. We will investigate recently proposed architectures inspired by measurement-based quantum computation, in particular the fusion-based quantum computation approach. We will also consider alternative ideas for the implementation of photonic gates, such as nested-interferometer gates for distributed quantum computation, and hybrid light-matter schemes for generation of spin-optical entanglement. We aim to analyse possible trade-offs between key resources, propose improvements on the modular building blocks of the different architectures, and propose strategies to integrate quantum error-correction, an essential ingredient for fault-tolerance in the longer term.
