Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (Concurso para Projetos de Investigação de caráter Exploratório em Todos os Domínios Científicos 2024), grant 2024.16192.PEX. Funded amount: EUR 59,992.10, as stated by the source. Runs 2026-02-01 to 2027-07-31. Keywords: Non-Markovian Quantum Processes, Quantum Process Tomography, Quantum Open Systems, Quantum Noise and Decoherence, Exact sciences. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2026-03-25); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Quantum technologies have reached a pivotal stage where devices with tens of qubits are now routinely available, and ongoing advancements promise systems approaching several hundreds in the near future. Characterizing these increasingly complex quantum processors is a major challenge: conventional Quantum Process Tomography (QPT) rapidly becomes infeasible due to its exponential resource overhead. This project proposes a paradigm shift by focusing on the generators of quantum evolution—encoded in the Liouvillian superoperator—rather than attempting to reconstruct entire quantum maps. By leveraging the physical intuition that interactions are typically local and few-body, we aim to achieve a scalable method for reconstructing and interpreting noise and decoherence mechanisms in large quantum systems. At the core of our approach is Quantum Liouvillian Tomography (QLT) , which we extend to handle non-Markovian effects, capturing memory and environment backflow phenomena that traditional Lindblad-based techniques overlook. Task 1 tackles the optimization of local few-qubit tomography, with special emphasis on selecting efficient Pauli-string measurement sets and robust gradient-based reconstruction methods. Task 2 addresses the challenge of merging these local Liouvillians to recover global dynamical generators, analyzing how to account for higher-body interactions, longer evolution times, and non-Markovian behavior. Once these foundational techniques are established, Task 3 demonstrates their practical feasibility on real quantum hardware, starting with small controlled experiments and culminating in a 10-qubit proof of principle. Finally, Task 4 ensures seamless project execution, encompassing regular progress reviews, reporting, workshop organization, and structured dissemination of outcomes. By integrating theoretical insights with experimental validations, this project aims to deliver an efficient and reliable framework for Liouvillian tomography that not only [shortened; the full text is on the OpenAIRE page]
