Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2008-06049_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: Karlstad University. Funded amount: SEK 345,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2009-01-01 to 2011-12-31. Keywords: Oklassificerat, Unclassified. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-04); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: The proposed programme is in the field of Theoretical High Energy Physics. One of the ultimate goals of this field is to find a unifying theory all fundamental interactions of matter in our Universe. The most promising candidate to this date is superstring theory. Strings are conjectured to be the smallest constituents of matter. They are important to describe the Universe in the first instances after the Big Bang. The project proposes to study different properties of string theory, and of conformal field theory, which is a general class of theories connected to string theory, as well as some of the mathematical structures underlying these theories. We propose to study string theories on general curved manifolds which may be interesting from a cosmological point of view as well as for understanding how string theory may be used to describe strong interactions. Particularly interesting backgrounds are those which arise in the famous Anti deSitter/ Conformal Field Theory duality conjecture of Maldacena. The programme will also study string cosmology i.e. the implications of string theory on cosmology. The are many important problems in cosmology that may be studied using string theory. We propose eg. to study if the process of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis can be altered changing the relative abundance of light elements. Other interesting problems that one may look at using string theories are in connection with gravitational lensing in the absence of dark matter.
