Project funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation (Projects), grant NNF23OC0086599. Participating organisations named by the source: Aarhus University. Runs n/a to 2029-07-31. Keywords: Photonics, Physics, Quantum Technologies. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-08-01); national funding data, not CORDIS; selected because its keywords name quantum. Abstract given by the source: As we know from seeing light beams cross unaffected, photons do not normally interact. This makes them excellent for communication technology but unsuitable for information processing. In this theoretical project, we will explore different ways to overcome this limitation by making photons interact. Our overarching strategy is to bind photons to interacting matter, and this will be explored in two experimental platforms that both have experienced impressive progress recently: Cold gases of atoms and electrons in two-dimensional crystals. Once we understand how to create strong photon-photon interactions, this opens the door for realising intriguing phases that consist partly of light and partly of matter. We will in a second part of this project explore this rich and exotic hybrid light-matter world, which includes phases where photons forms spatial patterns or behave like a fluid. The project has transformative perspectives for science and for applications including in biomedicine._x000D_
